Mobile Application Glitches, Confusing Navigation, Occasional System Errors, Inconsistent Feature Development
Users appreciate Canvas LMS for its user-friendly interface, extensive customization options, and robust feature set. They find it effective for managing courses, delivering content, facilitating communication, and assessing student progress. The platform's integration capabilities and mobile app also receive praise. However, some users mention occasional technical glitches and integration challenges. Canvas is a robust LMS that our students in Grades 6 through 12 use on a daily basis. The ability for Canvas to pass grades back to our Student Information System and use LTI plug-in to connect to other products, such as EdPuzzle and our curriculum online textbooks makes it an invaluable tool for our educators.
Canvas is a little too sophisticated for our K-5 students and Educators. We piloted it in the past, and the students and teachers had a level of difficulty organizing and following their daily curriculum.
During the pandemic when our teachers needed a robust LMS to provide quality curricular courses that matched our state and district standards and rigor, Canvas was the perfect fit. Our courses are synced from our LMS to Canvas via a plugin for quick and easy rostering of courses. The ability to manually create courses and bulk upload students has been a feature embraced by our high school guidance department as they build out courses for each graduating class of students that the students participate in from grades 9 through 12. We use Canvas courses for Credit Recovery, clubs and other student supports. Our special education course managers at the secondary level utilize Canvas to monitor their caseloads. The canvas observer feature also allows parents/guardians to view their student's coursework and grades on a daily basis.
I love the link integration and how it is much more intuitive than Blackboard. Having the app that functions well is extremely helpful.
There are so many different things that you can do with it that it is sometimes hard to learn how to implement it more effectivley.
The University uses it for all course work and it works much better than Blackboard which was previously used.
As a TA, I use it to grade assignments for students and give them feedback. It's pretty good for educators as well as students. Students can read my feedback but also reply to it and ask for further clarification.
The website when used on my desktop gives me no issues and works seamlessly but the mobile app can be very frustrating at times. It often will shut down and restart automatically saying the app 'ran into a problem'.
Allows me to see what assignments are due to grade, and when. As a TA for 3 classes, this is quite organized for me and Canvas separates my schedule for all three of the courses.
I like that students, parents, and teachers can go to one place for all of their needs. Announcements, Assignments, Grades, Discussions, and all pertinent information that students need is all in one place.
Canvas has a learning curve for teachers and students to learn to use. It can sometimes be cumbersome and clicky to get everything in it and train teachers on the use but as the intergration improves, it becomes easier.
Integration with Google is becoming easier and the communication with parents about what is happening in each class and the progress of how their student is doing.
Canvas is flexible and makes it easy for me to customize courses to fit the needs of my learners and my course content whether I'm teaching high school, designing professional development, or teaching higher ed.
There is a steeper learning curve than say Google Classroom, but it's time well spent for the amount of functionality! There are some ways I wish the SIS integrations were better and that some of the LTIs worked a little more fluidly.
Canvas makes it easy to centralize my learning materials for students and helps create a consistent user experience while also allowing my teachers to still design courses that align with their personal style of teaching
The thing I like best is the open ecosystem. Canvas integrates with hundreds of partners which makes it possible to do almost anything you want to do. You are not limited to just the tools in the LMS.
There are some things that seem dated in the LMS like the Inbox. It would be great if the inbox could be updated or integrated with on-campus email systems.
Canvas is helping us create our online programs and courses, providing access to students, literally, all across the country.
Canvas is allso helping us solve our assessment needs for accreditation, and we are excited to see how this will help us in the future.
I find the customizability is fantastic once you get over your initial learning curve. You can hook in outside apps and design a beautiful course using different graphics and information that can reach all kinds of learners from auditory to hands-on projects or simulations.
There is a learning curve. I had to watch some videos to learn about a lot of the different features since I didn't have anyone to specifically teach me, so it can be overwhelming at times. While I wouldn't consider myself a newbie anymore, I also don't think I'm an expert either (though my department might disagree!). So you definately have to put the work in to learn the basic functions which some people are not willing to do.
I teach EMT class so we use it as a gradebook, assessment for exams and also assignments to upload such as electronic patient care reports which can then be graded and used as artifacts when it comes to audits or explanations for our industry partners to show our students come out with certain skills they like to see.
The thing I like most about Canvas is how user friendly it is. The interface is very neat and clean, and I am sure this is a huge advantage for students to find their course content in an organized and efficient manner.
The thing I dislike most about Canvas is that the mobile application version seems to be neglected when compared to the web version. Our school conducted a feedback event and we found that all of our students are using the mobile application, but it can lag and glitch, and it is not nearly as accessible as the web version. To give a bit more context, we use third-party tools to enhance accessiblility (ex. readspeaker) but these tools do not work well on phones/tablets.
Canvas solves many problems for our institution. One of the most notable ones is keeping records of course content, grades, syllabus; we are happy to have everything a student needs in one centralized place.
What I enjoy most about the Canvas LMS is it's flexibility to customize "Pages" to enhance the student's end user experience. It's definitely a positive to be able to customize course sites with ease and Canvas' functionality eliminates the need for students to endlessly scroll through a list of files to find what they need.
There aren't many downsides to Canvas for me. Perhaps some easier options/workflows when it comes to linking internal documents, assignments etc while you're within the content editor. At present, it's just one too many clicks to get to where I need to be.
Canvas is providing an optimal solution for our online learning students that want an enhanced user experience

In general, it's very user-friendly for both instructors and students. I have used it as both. I like how the assignments build the calendar for you and you don't have to include them in your syllabus. It's also gives assignment reminders to the student and grading reminders to the instructor which I find very helpful. You can also move assignments around on the calendar and it adjusts the due dates for you!
They have published a terrific user guide online that answers almost any question you might have and so I have never had to use customer support. I also like how many external applications are compatible, like Zoom, Edpuzzle, and Yellowdig.
The one thing I dislike as an instructor is that I cannot reassign something to a single student without giving everyone another attempt. This can be confusing for students.
Our program is 100%online so we need a quality LMS.
