Layer customer service is fast and the engineers provide quick feedback on bugs. The documentation for all platforms is pretty straight forward and easy to implement. It is available for all ios, android and web. It supports mime types for custom message announcements. They also have staging environments for testing your product.
We are habing some issues with authenticating and de-authenticating user with layer service for android sdk. The sdk is also missing some callback features for loading messages and conversation and the developer has to implement themselves or forking the code from git. Other problem we were having had to do with pending images.
Layer is easy to implement at least for mobile and is used by a lot of other companies as well. When we were deciding, Twilio was also on top of list. We chose Layer since it is focused on rich messaging.
