Solr is designed from th groud up for scalability. If you are launching a search product and expect demand to grow this is an excellent option. The support community is also excellent. One of the best Open Source projects out there.

For some tasks working with Solr requries customization beyond what is needed with commercial products. Solr lacks some data filters that commercial rpoducts offer. Entity extraction is basic.

Look at all the features that your project requires so that you can identify functionality that is off the shelf vs custom.

Online publishing. Performance and flexiblity and extensibility are all excellent.

Solr strength is the fact that it can quickly search through billions (yes with a B) or records to ptu the right data in front of a user.

There is not much to dislike about solr. sometimes solr cloud acts up and does not fail over correctly.

if you need to search massive amounts of data, Solr is the best.

Search through millions or records with multiple facets within each record to get the right record in from of the searcher fast.

The customisability of the solr is so good that anyone can set it up and customise it for his/her needs

Aslo the documentation provided is too good

The inbuilt filters are more than sufficient for any of your needs and also you can customise them as per your need there are various features of solr that are helping us in our buisnesss

I have had many issues with multi word synonyms

it simply doesn't work

If you have huge database with huge raw text docs you can go for solr else database search is ok to use

We are solving problems for tax professionals to find rulings . Usually to find any previous ruling user has to go through 12 huge books with 10's of thousands of pages each so that was very time consuming task but now through our system people and find their resources in no time

Good admin UI to watch the system metrics and delta indexing process which runs at a preset interval.

There is nothing specific that I don't like about Solr.

Large set user activities data feeds. We index this data in Solr and show them on the activities page.

it is very easy and simple to access its data via REST API. The flexibility in adjusting the query in terms of boosting, faceting and more is very useful.

It would be good to handle authentication natively in an enterprise scale. Currently it has to be wrapped by another service that does authentication.

It is used whenever high and large data volume needs to be filtered and classified for search and filtering.Hence this is very poweful tool to be used . Alternative tools like elastic search can also be used and utilised in multiple search engine across the organisation whenever there is need to search on large volume of data. Hence it becomes essential to deploy , handy , quick and light weight tool . I would recommend this tool for all the organisation which is looking for easy search engine on high volume of data. This is big deal when performance is critical for frontend application across any organisation
